Empowering Students: 1:1 Device Program

The Groton-Dunstable Regional School District provides a 1:1 device program to enhance learning while ensuring technology remains a tool, not a distraction. Kindergarten and first-grade students use 1:1 Apple iPads, while students in grades two through eight are assigned 1:1 Google Chromebooks. At Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, students can take home a Chromebook or bring their device from home.

We recognize the importance of protecting instructional time. Research shows that even when devices are out of sight, the cognitive pull of digital distractions can take over 20 minutes to overcome. That’s why we emphasize using technology only when the task requires it and fostering a balance between screen time and real-world engagement.

To maintain a structured learning environment, iPads and Chromebooks remain in school, and student Google for Education accounts are restricted to approved communication channels. All student devices have web filtering and comply with School Committee policies and the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Families are encouraged to review Policy IJND: Access to Digital Resources and Policy IJNDB: Empower Digital Use Policy to understand our commitment to digital safety.

For students needing a Chromebook for home use or a 5G hotspot, please contact Luke Callahan, Ed.D., at lcallahan@gdrsd.org for assistance.

Why Are Chromebooks and iPads Used in School?

When used intentionally, technology enhances personalized learning, fosters collaboration, and prepares students for college and careers. However, without clear boundaries, devices can become distractions rather than learning tools. We work with our staff to protect students from online risks such as social media distractions, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content—just as we supervise them in hallways and classrooms.

By implementing structured technology use, we ensure that Chromebooks and iPads serve their intended purpose: supporting academic growth, critical thinking, and meaningful collaboration—without competing for students’ attention.
