Swallow Union Weekly Update Week of October 10th, 2022

We experienced a very exciting and full three days of learning with our students this week.  Please be sure to check the Live Feed section of our website as we share weekly updates on what our students are learning and engaging in during school.  Enjoy the beautiful fall season that is upon us as we enter into the weekend ahead!

Today our third graders participated in a special lesson from the Discovery Museum.  They were able to make their own magnetic toy while demonstrating their understanding of attraction, repelling, our Earth and gravity.  When your third grader comes home be sure to ask them about their invention and how it works!

Note from the Health Office:

Attention Parents of 3rd and 4th Grades

Physical exams are required by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for grades K, 3, 7, and 10.  If you have not sent a physical in for your 3rd grader, please do so when your child has their scheduled physical exam visit this year. There are many 4th graders who do not have a physical exam on record from last year.  Please send those in as soon as possible so that your child’s health record will be complete. They can be emailed to the nurses (jgervais@gdrsd.org, kdloureiro@gdrsd.org ) or a hard copy can be sent in with your child to school to give to the nurse.

Thank you,

Nurse Jen and Nurse Kate

Early Literacy Night!

Thursday, October 20, 2022

7:00 PM

Zoom!

Please join us to learn more about how our whole community works together with our youngest students on emergent and early literacy skills. Those important skills, such as phonemic awareness, letter/sound knowledge, concepts of print, and oral language knowledge build the foundation that is needed to be a successful reader and writer beyond the early years. We will share how we work with learners at school in these areas. We will also share some ideas for how to make literacy a part of your daily life at home. You will get a chance to hear from Amanda Densmore, the PreK-8 ELA Supervisor, as well as literacy specialists from both Swallow Union and Florence Roche. We look forward to seeing you!

Anyone is welcome to join us, but our focus will be literacy instruction in K-2. Interested PreK families are encouraged to join as well.
