April Vacation

Swallow Union Update

Week of April 10th, 2023

As we begin April vacation (which I can hardly believe is here), we are ending on a high note with so many recognitions and growth as a school community!   We have celebrated our scientists from the Science Fair and we have stretched our imagination and illustration skills following Matt Taveres’ visit!  We have congratulated those who are performing in the upcoming play Beauty and the Beast, and we have recognized our 3rd and 4th-grade students for showing up as Ti-GRRRs on MCAS testing!

First Grade Concert

Today we ended this week with Community Reading Day,  Dress as your Favorite Book Character, and welcomed some of our community members to read to our students!

Dunstable Select Board Member, Leah Basbanes reads "Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon" by P. Lovell to Mrs. Lattini and Mrs. Olson’s class.

Lacey McCabe, Mother, and GD School Committee Representative read "I’m Gonna Like Me" by J. Curtis & L. Cornell to Mrs. Vargeletis’ Kindergarten class!

Massachusetts State Representative Margaret Scarsdale read "What to Do with a Problem" by Kobi Yamada to a few of our third-grade classrooms.

Ms. Wendy Salvatore, GD Middle School Principal read "Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin" by Chieri Uegaki to our fourth graders.

Thank you to all of our Community Readers that came out today to visit Swallow Union:

Sue Psaledakis, Dunstable Historian

Officier Pietroforte, Dunstable Police Officer

Jordan Wynn, Lincoln Labs Scientist & SU Alumni

Firefighter Josh and Firefighter Sean, Dunstable Fire Department

Our school calendar is full right until summer!  We have been hard at work planning for our 4th Grade Moving On Celebration, our whole school Step Up Day, Transition Planning for our incoming Kindergartners and our outgoing Fourth Graders, Field Days, Chorus Concerts, and Field Trips and I am sure I am leaving some things out.  Phew.  And I personally can’t wait for each and every event that will lead us off for the summer!

Through all of it, we remain focused on teaching and learning and will have 39 school days remaining when we return from April break.  We are holding tight to our Core Values, which build our character individually and as a school.  Every time a Ti-GRRR card is earned, it is proudly displayed on our Core Value Wall in the cafeteria.  Each card represents one brick in the foundation of our school community, sharing the responsibility equally and that our contributions matter.  We all contribute to the strength of our foundation, ensuring it will last within ourselves and in our building culture for years to come, and for the future students, families, and staff who will join our Swallow Union family.  I LOVE seeing all the students reading over the Ti-GRRR cards during lunch, making connections with the students they are reading about, talking amongst themselves about being a Ti-GRRR, and their excitement when new cards/bricks have been placed on our wall!

One last update!  Our last day of school is a half day on Friday, June 16th.

Wishing you all a wonderful school vacation week ahead!  May you find time for the outdoors, family, friends, travel, sports, and your favorite book!

2nd Annual Bike Rodeo

GD is partnering with both the Groton and Dunstable police departments on Saturday, April 29 to host our second annual bike rodeo at GDRHS from 9a-1p.  There will be a representative from MABikes conducting safety sessions for students preK-4 all day.  Students will also have the opportunity to bike through an obstacle!  We will be doing helmet fittings and giving away free helmets and bike lights for kids.  The police officers will be talking about safety as well as meet and greet with the kids.  Last but not least, both PE teachers from the district will be assisting with the entire event.  It is sure to be a great day!
