HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE UPDATES SPRING 2023

Our department has been busy in and outside of the classroom. In addition to Business, Economics, Current Events and Honors History courses, Ms. Rosenfeld has mentored DECA. DECA prepares “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for college and careers.” The club has 53 students. Fifteen of those students went on to compete at the state competition in Boston, with two students making it into the finals.  Congratulations to Ms. Rosenfeld and the DECA students for a successful year!  Mr. Snodgrass, in addition to teaching AP Government and World History I, tried his hand at directing the Fall Play this year. Mr. Snodgrass joined GD’s Drama Guild last year, advising the Winter Festival of One-Act Plays and Producing. This year, Mr. Snodgrass directed for the first time ever. His rendition of Pride and Prejudice was outstanding!  Support Mr. Snodgrass and Drama Guild by attending our school shows; shows happen three times a year. The Spring Show is Alice in Wonderland. In addition to teaching World History II and Economics, Mr. McLellan has created a new class this year.  The new course is Modern US and the World; this course will allow students to do a deep dive into modern issues that impact our present lives and the future. Ms. Reynolds, who teaches United States History and Student and the Law, is preparing for a new Historical Topics class. The class to be run next year is Justice and Genocide. This class meets the requirements of Bill S.2557 with an in depth course while also offering supports to meet the requirements of Genocide Education in our overall History Curriculum. Thank you to Ms. Reynolds for spearheading this effort. Mr. Murphy, in teaching US History I, will be starting his Battlefield Tour Guide Project soon. In this project, students create a virtual tour that includes details of a military battle with leaders, significant moments, and outcomes. The project provides opportunities for research, analysis, communication, and technical skills. You can also find Mr. Murphy on the lacrosse field. Try to view a lacrosse game or two and show support for the team this season! Ms. DeBenedictis has a busy schedule teaching World History, US History, and Sociology.  Her Sociology class is about to begin their Culture Project. In addition to learning cultural norms, institutions, languages, and demographics, students have deep dive options of examining rituals, celebrations, laws, music, attire, and homelife. The project is fabulous for learning about cultural norms in our larger world. Ms. Lamson has taught US Honors II, Women’s History, Public Speaking, and Theater Arts this year. Ms. Lamson is hoping to teach Improv next year. In addition to classes, Ms. Lamson has worked with students to begin a school History Club. The club had a great time on its first field trip to Boston, even with the rain. Ms. Lamson continues to support the high school Drama Guild. Ms. Lamson will be attending the Organization of American Historians conference this year and is looking forward to learning about happenings and discussions in the larger Historian community. We hope your year has been as successful as ours. Please reach out to any of us if you have questions regarding History or Social Science courses for next year; we would enjoy hearing from you!

We are looking for four host families for the 23/24 School Year. If you are interested in more information contact Mary Cain at mcain@gdrsd.org.

Employment and Education in Neurodiversity Webinar / In collaboration with Neurodiversity Horizons / Wednesday April 5, 2023 6-7 p.m. EST - Virtual via Zoom

University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Autism Research and Education (CARE) and Neurodiversity Horizons are collaborating to host an Employment and Education in Neurodiversity Webinar! We are bringing together a panel of neurodiverse advocates to talk about their experiences regarding employment and higher education. Neurodiversity is a rising advocacy, and we encourage everyone to join and learn about making our world more inclusive. Many autistic adults are unemployment or underemployment, including those with a college degree. This is an important problem that we need to fix by battling the stigma against neurodiversity. To learn more about this and make our world a better place, join us on April 5th 6-7 p.m. EST on Zoom!
