Global Day of Play

February 3, 2023

Dear Florence Roche Families,

Happy February!  I hope everyone has some interesting indoor activities planned for the weekend.  Tomorrow’s low temperatures are predicted to be extremely cold.  We made the best of today’s cold weather and indoor recess.  I observed a group of 3rd graders playing a game of Monopoly during their recess.  I commented that they were playing an “old school” game.  We got curious about the origin date of Monopoly and after several guesses, we learned that the first game of Monopoly was made in 1935!  88 years and it still provides entertainment and engagement for indoor recess.  Students get to practice important social skills like listening to each other, taking turns and following directions.  It’s also a great opportunity to have conversations with each other.  This is the perfect weekend to break out an old school board game.

Many of our classrooms celebrated the Global Day of Play this week.  Students brought in games from home to share or chose an activity or game to play from the classroom.  This was one of our February Spirit activities and we ended the week with a stripes and/or flannel day.  Next Friday is Football Friday in honor of the upcoming Super Bowl.  Students and staff are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite team whatever the sport may be.

Wednesday, February 8th is our 100th Day of School!  This is a milestone day especially in our kindergarten classrooms.  I look forward to seeing how many different ways our students will represent 100.

Next week is National School Counseling Week.  Our school counselors, Mrs. Cahill and Ms. Sullivan, are so important to the social and emotional well being of our school community.  They provide support to our students and staff in so many different ways.  We couldn’t do this without them!  Thank you and appreciation goes out to Mrs. Cahill and Ms. Sullivan for what you do everyday!

Is your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader curious about science?  One of our Groton-Dunstable high school students is leading a “Fun with Science” program at the Prescott Community Center beginning on March 5th.  Click on the link below for all of the details and sign up information.
