Grade 4 at School Committee

January 13, 2023

Dear Florence Roche Families,

I hope that everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend. Even though we recently returned from our holiday break, we all appreciate the additional time to recharge at this time of the year.  Today’s 50 degree temps felt more like late March rather than mid January.  It’s been an uneventful winter in regards to the weather thus far.  Hopefully, the snow doesn’t all come at once.  Sorry skiers!

This week we had 2 of our fourth grade students lead the Pledge of Allegiance and share something about themselves during the school committee meeting.  This is always a moment of pride for our students and staff as we get to see them shine in front of our district school leaders.  They both did a great job.

The Topping Off Ceremony will take place on Tuesday morning beginning at 9:30.  We have a student from each grade level who will represent all of our students in this milestone phase of the new building construction.  All students and staff had the opportunity to sign the ceremonial beam that will hang in our new gymnasium.  I am amazed at how quickly the steel erection has been going.  You can really see the size and scale of the building now.

We are beginning to plan for our MCAS testing for grades 3 and 4 students that will be administered in April and May.  There is a lot of coordination that takes place prior to administration to ensure that everything goes smoothly.  Our first step is to set the testing schedule and share it out with stakeholders.  If you have a 3rd or 4th grader being assessed this year, please make note of the schedule when planning for appointments, etc.  Thank you for your support.

Is your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader curious about science?  One of our Groton-Dunstable high school students is leading a “Fun with Science” program at the Prescott Community Center beginning on January 22nd.  Click on the link below for all of the details and sign up information.

Our school resource officer, Pete Breslin, shared this information for parents about internet safety.  As our elementary students are learning about internet safety in school, this training is helpful for any parent/guardian wanting to learn more about what to be aware of when children are accessing the internet at home.

The United States Attorney’s Office is hosting a virtual Internet safety presentation for parents the evening of Wednesday, January 18th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.  The presentation, entitled Keeping Kids Safe and Secure Online:  A Project Safe Childhood Presentation for Parents will bring awareness to the dangers of the internet, including gaming and social media platforms that predators use to groom children with the intent of exploiting them sexually online or for an in person meeting.  The presentation will focus on prevention by educating parents and community members how to help keep children safe online.  We will be covering the following topics:

Social Media 101 & Digital Footprint

Cyberbullying

Sexting

Gaming

Victim Support

Protecting Against Online Predation

Who should attend:  Parents, guardians, local police departments, school administrators, youth program leaders and anyone who would like to learn how to keep children safe from online dangers.

The presentation is free. Registration is required.  The link to register is included on the attached flyer and is also included here:
