Being Kind!

10/7/22

Dear Florence Roche Families,

It’s looking to be a very nice long weekend with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures.  My leaves haven’t fallen yet, so I will have plenty of time to just relax and enjoy the time.  I hope you are all able to take some time to relax as well.

Remember that Tuesday is a no school day for students next week.  We look forward to welcoming our students back on Wednesday, October 12th.  Our teachers will be busy on Tuesday participating in professional learning activities.  In the morning, we will be learning from Dr. Kimberly Parker.  Dr. Parker recently published Literacy is Liberation:  Working Toward Justice Through Culturally Relevant Teaching.  This is an exciting opportunity for us to learn new strategies, so that we can be our best for all students.

The FloRo News Report is a project-based learning experience involving our 4th graders.  Mrs. Disch, our iLab specialist teacher, provides a structure and guidance for each news production.  The plan for the FloRo News Report this year is to produce and share a monthly news report.  Students generate content related to school happenings as well as some personal interest pieces.  This is always a work in progress and we learn about what makes a quality news production each time we go through the process.  During this experience, students are practicing writing and speaking for an audience, working with deadlines, and working productively in partnerships or teams.  This month’s edition of the news was produced by students in Mrs. Smith and Mr. Fahy’s classes.  Classroom teachers shared the news with their classes this week.  I thought you would enjoy seeing it too!  Click on the link for this month’s news.  FloRo News Report 10/22

Early Literacy Night!

Thursday, October 20, 2022

7:00 PM

Zoom!

Please join us to learn more about how our whole community works together with our youngest students on emergent and early literacy skills. Those important skills, such as phonemic awareness, letter/sound knowledge, concepts of print, and oral language knowledge build the foundation that is needed to be a successful reader and writer beyond the early years. We will share how we work with learners at school in these areas. We will also share some ideas for how to make literacy a part of your daily life at home. You will get a chance to hear from Amanda Densmore, the PreK-8 ELA Supervisor, as well as literacy specialists from both Swallow Union and Florence Roche. We look forward to seeing you!

Anyone is welcome to join us, but our focus will be literacy instruction in K-2. Interested PreK families are encouraged to join as well.

Have a nice long weekend!!
