Principal 's Update 9/2/22

September 2, 2022

Dear Florence Roche Families,

It’s been great to see our students return to school this week.  There is a lot of excitement in the building as friends are reunited, new relationships are forming and our kindergarten students begin their educational journey.  The start of the school year is so important for establishing routines and expectations in classrooms and throughout the common spaces.  We consider these “First Six Weeks of School” to be instrumental in setting everyone up for a successful school year.  I’m thinking you are also experiencing some changes at home as your students transition back to school.  Working on routines and expectations at home will support what we are doing in school.  Thank you for partnering with us and please reach out to us if you have any questions.

As a reminder, please order your child’s lunch in advance on the website FD MealPlanner so that our kitchen team knows how many lunches to prepare.  This will help to minimize food waste and ensure all students have lunch.  There is no charge for school lunch, however there is a charge for milk if not taken with a lunch.  We also have small bottles of water available during lunch this year, but there is a charge for these.  You can add funds to your myschoolbucks account if you plan to have your child purchase an individual milk or water.

The Florence Roche School Council is in need of parent members.  Massachusetts public schools are required to have a school council.  The school council is made up of parents, school personnel and a community member.  School councils meet throughout the year to work on school improvement plans and other school related business.  If you are interested or would like more information, please contact me bodonoghue@gdrsd.org and I will provide you with more details.

Now that your children are back in school, do you find that you have some spare time?  We are looking for substitute teachers to join our available pool.  If interested or if you have any questions about the role and responsibility of a substitute teacher, please contact our school office.

Our Curriculum Night for grades 2-4 is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th from 6:00-7:15.  Classroom teachers in grades 2-4, specialists, interventionists, special educators and our nurses will be present and available to meet you.  Classroom teachers will share information about the curriculum and their classrooms beginning at 6:15.  At 6:45-7:15, specialists and special educators will be in their rooms to meet you.  As a reminder, this evening is not planned for individual parent conferences.  Those are scheduled for early December.

First grade teachers will host parents and guardians on Monday, September 19th.  Details for this event will be shared in a future update.  Our kindergarten team hosted a welcome to school event on August 29th.

Have a nice long weekend!

Brian
