Policy:  Homework for Family Vacations and Illness

Concerning family vacations taken while school is in session:

Since much of what happens during a school day - class discussion, hands-on projects, cooperative work - cannot be made up or the exact amount of time predicted, NO MAKE UP WORK WILL BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME.
Rather, if parents choose to take vacation time during school, then students should benefit as much as possible from the experience.

With that in mind, students will be asked to keep a journal and share with the class upon return.
Students may also be asked to do a small project, such as complete a novel the class has been reading or finish a writing project.

Upon return students will be given make-up work and it is the responsibility of the parents to help students complete that work

Teachers will do what is feasible to teach new concepts introduced during child's absence and the students may have materials to complete over time with guidance from their parents.

Homework Policy for Illness

If a student is sick, make up work will be sent home on the third consecutive day. If a student is only out two days, we have found it makes more sense to make up work at school. Often when packets of work have been sent home, students really have not felt up to doing what was asked. We have also found that students do better work when the make up tasks have been reviewed at school.
