Poison Prevention

The last week in March is Poison Prevention Week. In the US, 1.2 million children a year accidentally ingest a potentially poisonous substance, and 30 die from this. All households should have the 24 hour toll free number for the Poison Control Center- 1-800-222-1222- prominently displayed near a phone. When a child has swallowed any substance that could be dangerous, this number should be called for advice. If the child is having trouble breathing or is unconscious, 911 should be called.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has advised that bottles of Ipecac syrup be thrown out. Ipecac was used as a home remedy to induce vomiting in the case of accidental ingestion. It is no longer recommended. In some situations, it would make matters worse to have a child vomit a poisonous substance. If something was swallowed and Poison Control says it needs to be removed, the child should go to the Emergency Room where it will be done safely and more effectively using other treatments.

In case of an emergency, access to help should be quickly and clearly available. I have attached, for your convenience, a copy of an Emergency Contact Sheet from the Kids Health web site. You can download a color copy if you prefer. Even children should be aware of how to obtain emergency help. They should know how to call 911, give their name and address, and describe an emergency. Role playing is one way to teach them this important skill.

Hopefully, you will never be in a position in which you need emergency help. But if you are, it is best to be prepared by knowing immediately what to do and where to get help.
