Animated man reading a speech.A Message From Mr. Myerson, Principal

I hope everyone had a great spring vacation and that you are ready for the final stretch of the school year.  We have a very busy eight weeks ahead of us.  The teachers continue to work diligently in getting their students ready to move onto the next grade.  We are also in the process of conducting end-of-the year assessments, which will show the progress the students have made throughout the year.  Additionally, it will help us as a school to focus on areas where we may need improvement.  We are also looking forward to our annual spring concerts for the primary grades.  This year will be different, as we are planning to have a concert for our kindergarten and first graders, and a musical for our second graders.  Furthermore, both of these events will be held at Swallow Union.

Lastly, our third and fourth graders will be concluding their MCAS testing this month.  Below are the actual days the testing will take place.  We needed to change the original dates due to a scheduling conflict.  If you have any questions regarding the new dates, please give me a call.

Grade 3 Math – May 13 and 14

Grade 4 Math – May 20 and 21

Make-Ups May 22 and 23

In addition to our usual end-of-the year activities, we are also planning events to welcome our new kindergarten students and those students and parents that will be joining us from Prescott and Florence Roche.  Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible for all the students, as well as our new teachers from Prescott.  Once the events are scheduled we will inform everyone involved.

Student placement is also part of our transition process and we will be working on this during the month of May as well.  I know parents are anxious about their child’s placement, and I want to reassure you that our staff does an excellent job.  We work hard to create balanced classrooms and focus on the dynamics of the total group of students in the classroom.  Students who will be joining us from Prescott and Florence Roche will be placed by their current teachers using the same philosophy.  I am confident the placement of your child will be a successful one.

I am also pleased to announce that Swallow Union has received two grants from the GDEF.  More information on these grants can be found on the next page.  I would like to thank the staff and parents for their work on writing and submitting the requests.

In closing, I want to welcome all the new students and families to the Swallow Union community and I am looking forward to meeting you.
