A Message from Betty Lavin, Principal

The time left is quickly disappearing.

Well, I guess this is it - the final edition of the Prescott Pipeline.  This edition has been the hardest one to write and one I have put off until the last moment. Debbie kept asking me if “my page” was ready yet and I gave her lame excuses why it wasn’t done.  It’s just that it’s hard to write coherently with teary eyes…

Where do I begin to thank you for 12 unbelievable years as Principal of Prescott?  It’s been an incredible journey and one that will stay close to my heart forever.  When I first took over, I wondered if we would ever have enough parents who would chose Prescott as their school of choice. The building was old, run down, and had minimal technology.  How would we ever sell this as a great institution of learning?  Well that part is history!  Thank you for believing in us and supporting us in every way possible.

When I think back over the past 12 years, so many special moments come to mind. I will miss having pizza lunch with the kids each week, birthday celebrations with penguins and pencils, the excitement of the kids at special assemblies, peer mediating out on the playground, listening to a 1st grader read for the first time, watching a master teacher work her magic, parental faces when their child takes the stage, children’s laughter through the halls and classrooms, and special hugs from the kids.  I will hold dear special traditions such as Opening Day Flag Raising Ceremony, Veterans Day exercises, Grandparent Brunch, Winter Carnival, Holiday Boutique, Field Day, Volunteer Brunch and most definitely high five’s on the final day of school.

As much as I will miss these special moments and traditions, I will especially miss the people who made all these things possible – the staff, the parents, and the kids.  The Prescott staff is the best staff on the planet.  They are caring, nurturing, knowledgeable, and committed to excellence in everything they do.  The Prescott parents are exceptional.  One need only hint of a want and it’s there before you can blink twice. It has been my privilege and pleasure to work with the PPO, the School Council, and all the parents.

The kids have been the joy of my life here at Prescott. I will miss their smiles, their thirst for knowledge, and love of learning.  I treasure their hugs as the end draws near.  They make me feel so loved.

Thanks to all of you for your love, kindness and support. Before Prescott, a penguin was just an awkward, waddling bird that resembled a nun (I went to parochial school so I can say that!). Now, whenever I see a penguin, I will think of Prescott and the love extended to me by all of you over the years. In the words of comedian Bob Hope, “Thanks for the memories.”  They are very special memories indeed.  Much love to all of you…
