First Grade News:

Mrs. Margolius’ Class

In Mrs. Margolius’ class we are going to plant sunflower seeds and watch how they grow.  In art we are working on a clay sun.  We are painting them and we’ll bring them home at the end of the year, as long as we don’t break them.   We are working on addition and subtraction in math.  We are learning to add three numbers together now.  We love it when we have extra recess on the nice days.  We colored and cut out flags for Memorial Day.  We taped the flag to a straw or pencil so we could wave them.

Ms. Wendy Frank came to our class a couple of times and she played music, sang and did some poetry.  We sang Tanka, Tanka Skunk.  We wrote a poem about Prescott and Ms. Frank sang it as a song.  We are doing poetry in class.  We have done Haiku, which is a poem with five syllables, seven syllables & then five again.  We are also doing Acrostic poems.  They are poems that you pick a word and then each letter of the word is a line of your poem.  We learned that we celebrate Memorial Day because of the soldiers who have fought  for our freedom.  Our soldiers are brave and we made flags to celebrate Memorial Day.

Second Grade News:

Mrs. Colpitts’ Class

We are learning about rocks in second grade.  We are learning about granite, mica, and quartz.  We have rock workbooks.  We are going to be working for the rest of May and into June. Learning about rocks is a fun thing to do. It is my favorite thing.  I really like it.  We are putting up penguins for a countdown to the last day school.

I love second grade because we have writing folders.  I love to write and I’m already on my second set of books.  I also love quiet reading.  I really love to read.  Chapter books are what I’m reading.  I also like free time.  I mostly draw, or do arts & crafts.  I really love recess too.  I’ve got a lot of friends to play with.  We play lots of things outside.  I also like journal writing time and I’m on my 101st page.  I really like reading, and my group and I are going to change from Tapestry to something else, soon.  I am doing S.R.A.’s and I’m on the color lime.  I’m pretty close to green.

Mrs. MacGregor’s Class

We made poems for our moms. We colored on the front of our poems. They were bio-poems. A bio-poem is about somebody. A regular poem can be something fake. We used nice words in our poems.

We play many games in Math like Cover-Up. I like it a lot. To play, you take 16 pennies then you cover some up. Then, your partner has to figure out how many are covered. That is how you play it. We are learning another game too. It is called Capture 5. We play it a lot, but we are still learning it. You have 12 markers on a 100 chart. Then you take 2 cubes. Say I had a cube on 9 and there is a marker on the 10. I had a +1 card and a +10 card. I would use the +1 card to land on 10, and I would capture one marker.

Third Grade News:

Ms. Gardner’s Class  -

We taught our teacher, yes we did! We taught Ms. G. about Ruby Bridges, Buffalo Bill Conner, Anne Oakley, Sequoyah (the inventor of the Cherokee alphabet) and many more people. We dressed up in our costumes and read our reports. You can see our reports in the hallway going upstairs and inside our classroom. We worked ourselves to the limit!

In Ms. Gardner’s 3rd grade class we are making wired houses out of little cardboard boxes, in each group. We will decorate them and give them a street address and give them names. Some people might give them a theme like in the old days or a modern theme. Each group has 3or 4 people: one planner, one artist and one leader. So far most of our class are done with the electrical wiring of our little cardboard boxes. I think all of our class has had a fun experience!

By Kathryn

In Ms. Gardner's class, we've been experimenting with light bulbs, batteries, wires, and motors to try to create circuits. We've wired flashlights inside cardboard rolls and had a light show, and we lit light bulbs with two wires, a battery, and a bulb. We also learned about circuit diagrams and series and parallel circuits. We've had a great time learning about electricity!

By Lyle

In Math we are making math games.  Everybody in our class created a math game.  All the games teach either multiplication, division, fractions, addition or subtraction.  My game is called Monster Dice.  It teaches adding money and multiplying numbers on dice.  I love playing math games.

For three weeks, an artist named Joni Parker Roach is teaching us about famous artists. She teaches us about the Renaissance, Impressionism, and Modern Art. She comes on Thursdays and it's so much fun! It will also help us with our artist reports coming up.

In Ms.G’s class we are studying art! We are each studying one artist and his/her paintings. In Art Class we are painting our own version of one of his/her paintings. I’m doing Joseph Stella, and I am painting Old Brooklyn Bridge. I love Art history and doing research.

Fourth Grade News:

Mrs. Nissi's Class

In school we started growing plants from special tiny seeds that are fast growing seeds.  We’ve been observing them everyday to see how it changes. They really are fast growing since they started to sprout on the third day! So far we’ve learned what is inside the seed and how it grows and we are just beginning to learn about photosynthesis.  Most the kids in the class named their plants. I predict that one day they will sprout a flower. I like learning about the lifecycle of many different things because I think it is interesting If you’re curious, come to the top floor at Prescott to check them out!

In Spanish class we are studying Spanish-speaking countries.  We each got to pull a country from a big sombrero.  Each country is different. We will find out about the flag, the capital of the country and very interesting facts.  We will put them together and jazz them up with cool colors on poster board.  We can even add Spanish decorations to the posters.  It should be an exciting project, as we will learn about other cultures!

Mrs. Roundtree’s Class

Last night we had our last concert at Prescott.  We sang Music Alone Shall Live, Blue Skies, Come Join in the Music, Surprise Symphony, and our special song, Making Friends.  Everyone joined us up on stage when we sang Making Friends. One of my favorite parts was when the lights went off and the kindergarten kites glowed in the dark!

On June 6 the fourth grade classes will canoe on the Nashua River.  Mrs. Chilcoat came in to show us a slide show about how the Nashua River was so polluted it turned yellow and red!  Now it's clean and aquatic animals live in it.  I can't wait to canoe on the Nashua River!

Studying plants is fascinating!  We are growing Wisconsin Fast Plants.  They've been growing for ten days and they already have two sets of leaves, the seed leaves and the true leaves.  They are growing so fast!  I can't wait to see what they look like, but I still have so many questions.  Will they have flowers? I can't wait to find out!
