Penguins are our mascot at Prescott School, and the library/computer lab is our “Rookery”. A rookery is a nesting area where penguins and certain other animals and birds nurture their young. We strive to make it a welcoming and nurturing place for our young students.

We are a small school, but we have a fine collection of books and magazines. You can peruse our books through the District’s online catalog at Prescott Library Catalog If a book is not available at Prescott, we may be able to borrow it from another school.

Students in kindergarten and grade 1 are allowed one book at a time and are encouraged to bring their book back every week on their scheduled library day. Students in grade 2 through 4 are allowed two books at a time. A book will not be marked “overdue” until the student has had it for more than two weeks. All books can be renewed as many times as needed, unless there is a waiting list. Students working on a research project may be given permission to take out more than two books at a time.

There are 25 Apple iMac computers and 4 Apple PowerMac G3’s in the Rookery. They are all connected to Prescott’s local network, as well as having high-speed Internet access.

Classes come to the Rookery to do word processing, internet research, explore websites, create art with Kid Pix, practice math facts, work on keyboarding skills, listen to “living books” and use curriculum specific software.

Having a shared space for computer and library has some challenges, but it also provides wonderful opportunities. Reference resources, books, magazines, online encyclopedias and the Internet are all available in one room. Students are encouraged to use more than one type of resource whenever they do research.

News from the Rookery -

First and second grade students met some famous people in the library in the last few weeks! Actually they met puppets dressed up like famous people and learned a little about their lives. The puppets portrayed the characters of Alexander Graham Bell, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin, Banniker for Grade 2 and Johnny Appleseed, Clara Barton, and Duke Ellington for Grade 1.

Students were also introduced to a biography written at their level about each famous person. They saw that some biographies were illustrated with drawings and some with actual photographs of the famous person. Afterwards there was a question and answer session for each famous person. The children asked some interesting questions and also made some good connections to their own lives.
