The New SAT 2005

The new SAT will be administered for the first time in March 2005 for the class of 2006.

The Major Changes…

Writing:

    • Multiple-choice questions (grammar and usage)
    • Student-written essay (20-25 minutes)

Critical Reading:

    • Analogies eliminated
    • Short reading passages added to existing long reading passages

Mathematics:

    • Math content expanded to include topics from third-year college preparatory math (exponential growth, absolute value, functional notation, and greater emphasis on topics such as linear functions, manipulations with exponents and properties of tangent lines)
    • Quantitative comparisons eliminated

Why is the SAT changing?

The SAT assesses student reasoning based on knowledge and skills developed by the student in school coursework.  The new SAT will improve the alignment of the test with current curriculum and institutional practices in high school and college.  By including a third measure of skills, writing, the new SAT will reinforce the importance of writing throughout a student’s education and will help colleges make better admissions and placement decisions.

The new PSAT/NMSQT

The new PSAT/NMSQT will be administered for the first time in the fall of 2004 and will be excellent practice for the new SAT.

How do I prepare for the new SAT?

According to the College Board, the best way to prepare for the SAT is by taking challenging courses in high school, and by reading and writing extensively in and outside of school.  Taking the PSAT/NMSQT is also a good way to prepare.  For more information and research on coaching and test preparation, visit www.collegeboard.com/counselors/hs/sat/testpret/satcoaching.html

NOTE  Check with each college to which you are applying to see if they require the new SAT, even if you have scores from the old SAT!
