Course Selection
Each spring, students select the courses they want to attend during the next school year. Based on how many students request a each course, a master schedule of courses to be taught is developed, and students are scheduled for classes.
At first glance, selecting classes for the next year can be an intimidating experience. However, with consideration, it is not that daunting a task. In fact, it can be a relatively enjoyable experience!
You may have heard rumors that “You can’t take band for a full year”, or “If I take math in the fall, I won’t be able to take it again until spring of the next school year”. Neither of these statements is factual, and class schedules can be as individual as students are unique.
Where do I go from here? There are several ways to proceed to select classes from the Program of Studies. For some, it is easier to plan using a 4-year plan, always remembering that you can revisit (and probably will need to revisit) the plan each year to update it to match your interests. The 4-year plan allows you to see how shifting classes from one year to another may allow other classes to fit into your schedule, creating a customized plan based on your interests and desires (as well as graduation requirements!)
For others, it may be easier to plan one year at a time. The course selection sheets for each grade (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade) list the required classes that most students complete during that grade, as well as the electives available to students in that grade.
Schedule samples are available to provide an idea of what MIGHT work in specific cases – but please remember that these are only examples, and the classes listed in them may or may not be offered in the particular year you are scheduling! They are by no means the only ways to accomplish their goals.
