Applying to College Here are some things to consider when applying to colleges: Choosing a college is not an exact science. You look at a lot of things in selecting a college – location, cost, size, special interests. Develop a list of colleges based on what’s important to you. You can use a computerized search program such as ExPAN (available in many guidance offices) to help with this process. Or try College Search on www.collegeboard.com Write or call for applications and information. Use this information and the school’s Web site (if they have one) to become familiar with each college’s goals, strengths, and offerings. Organize this information – make a file for each college you pursue. Keep all documents, notifications, and other information. Complete the application and send it in as early as possible. KEEP A COPY OF WHAT YOU SEND FOR YOUR FILE. Visit as many colleges as possible. Summer is a great time to do this, but you should also try to visit again when school is in session so you can see what a typical day is like. Seek out college representatives who visit your school, and attend college fairs in your area. Ask questions and keep notes for later reference. Write essays that focus on experiences that make you stand out from the crowd. You are a unique individual. Ask for recommendation letters from teachers who know you and can point out the qualities that make you special. Show off our creativity, initiative, leadership and other personal qualities. Bring in all aspects of your life, including family, school, work, internships, special courses, special talents, and community service. After you’ve heard where you’ve been accepted, notify the college of your decision and send the necessary deposit. Request that final transcripts be sent from your high school. Remember to notify the colleges you have decided not to attend so they can offer admission to others.
