How are courses assigned?

Students sign up for courses each spring, specifying the courses they would like for the following full year.  For eighth graders, the guidance department provides assemblies and information in the middle school and hands out the program of studies (course catalog) and  course selection sheets.  In addition, the guidance department offers a special evening for 8th grade parents where they cover course selection as well as provide a solid introduction to the changes that will be encountered moving from the middle school to the high school.  The guidance department is also present at the high school curriculum/open house nights to answer questions and provide further assistance.

For high school students, course selection sheets and the program of studies are handed out during the school day.

Students then fill out the course selection sheets with the courses they would like to take.  Current teachers provide guidance and suggestions about the most appropriate courses and/or course levels for students. Once the course selection sheets have been completed, they are returned to the guidance department.

Preliminary course assignments are then mailed to each student’s home.  At this time, students (and parents) should review the assignments to make sure these are the courses the student has requested.  If the expected courses are not on the preliminary course assignment sheet, this is the time to contact the guidance department for assistance!

During the spring, final course assignments and schedules are delivered to each student.  The schedule will list classes for each class period (A-D) for each term.  Again, if you feel anything is amiss with this schedule, you should contact the school and arrange to talk with your child's guidance counselor right away.
