Course Description

The course is structured to:

  • Provide comprehensive in-depth coverage of all major areas of the discipline.

  • Present an interesting and lively mix of theoretical concepts and practical applications.

  • Aid students to develop the critical thinking skills essential to comprehension and assessment of social situations and problem-solving endeavors.

  • Offer primary and secondary source materials for student consideration in applying sociological concepts to problems and everyday activities.

  • Develop powers of observation and analysis toward the end of appreciating differences and commonalties among communities and cultures in today's "Global Village."

  • Foster a heightened awareness of the need for increased social interaction and humanistic understanding of all participants in the human experience.

Evaluation

  1. Tests (30%) - Including multiple choice, TIP, short answer essays, and 3 -5 paragraph essays. Term projects will include written papers, visual posters, and oral presentations.

  1. Quizzes (30%) - Including basic multiple choice questions, TIP questions, and short paragraph essays.

  2. Homework (30%) - Will be assigned several times a week, and in most cases is due on the following day. Any missed homework can be made up for half credit up until one week later. If you were absent you can find out what homework you missed by looking it up YOURSELF on the board at the front of the room.

  3. Class Participation (10%) - Everyone on the first day of class has a 100% participation average. However, every time the class is interrupted or behavior is unbecoming, points will be deducted from your participation average.

Format for Written Work

  • White lined paper or, if using a computer, white printer paper.

  • Name, Date, Period in upper right hand corner.

  • Messy and illegible work will not be accepted.

  • Pencil, blue or black ink ONLY! Otherwise 5 points will be deducted from the assignment.

Rules and Expectations

  1. Respect - There will be no talking while I'm talking or when another student is talking. At all times, be tolerant of opinions that differ from your own. Never 'bad mouth' others.

  2. Be at class on time - You must have a pass if you are late for class. Lateness to class without a pass will result in detention (Remember, 6 tardies equals 1 absence!).

  3. Come prepared for class - No surprises here. You will bring a pen/pencil to class every day as well as a class notebook. There are many class notes that will be taken just about every day - they are inevitable. Also, I give out a lot of handouts so I would recommend that you get a folder or a three-ring binder to keep things organized. As for the textbook, it too will be brought to class everyday and I expect them to be covered, and remain that way (or face a detention).

  4. Behavior - Disruptive, disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated and will result in a loss of points from your participation grade (see grading section).

  5. Housekeeping - My room is my 'home away from home.' I ask you to do your part in keeping it habitable.  Please do not litter or write on the desks. If you are caught doing either you will be asked to clean such a mess at detention.

  6. Cutting Class - Subtle hint, do NOT skip by class. I will find out! Still, I emphasize two things. First, if you skip a test or quiz you will receive a zero. No exceptions! Second, if you are absent from class on the day of a test or due date, but are in school sometime during the day, you are expected to see me.

No Food or Drinks in Class
