HOMEWORK - GRADES K-4

DEFINITION OF HOMEWORK

Homework is a purposeful learning experience that is an extension and application of school learning.  Homework is assigned by the teacher to be done outside the school environment.

Please be aware that the time assignments are guidelines.  Some students may take more or less time then is listed below.  If your child is consistantly taking significantly more time to complete the assignments, please contact your child's classroom teacher.

POLICY

We believe that homework has a definite place in the education program in the elementary school when it serves the following purposes:

1.  Stimulates and develops independent study habits, responsibilities, and self-direction in relation to the pupil's maturity and intelligence.

2.  Reinforces school learning by providing necessary practice and application of needed skills.

3.  Enriches and extends school experiences.

4.  Helps children to budget time.

5.  Encourages children to use community resources.

CRITERIA FOR HOMEWORK

1.  Homework will be assigned in all grades.

2.  Daily and extended assignments may be given:

a.  After a prolonged absence from school.

b.  When a child has a specific weakness and the school feels the student will benefit from home assistance.

c.  When work can be done easily and profitably at home.

d.  When parents understand how to help the child.

RECOMMENDED ACCUMULATION OF

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

K        Up to 30 minutes per week

1-2         60-75 minutes per week       

3         75-100 minutes per week 

4         120-180 minutes per week

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

1.  To bring assignments, supplies, books and all other related materials home and return them on time.

2.  To complete homework neatly and carefully.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY

1.  To provide a quiet study space.

2.  To encourage a set study hour.

3.  To supervise a child's assignments and provide assistance when necessary.

4.  To help coordinate planning for long-range assignments when necessary.
