Socialization and Information
By Mr. Russ (Russ Hoyt, Early Childhood Director)
We are quickly moving into the second month of our school year. I want to bring your attention to, and invite you to, two upcoming events at Boutwell in the month of October. One is all about socialization, on Thursday, October 2nd, we are hosting our second annual Autumn Ice Cream Social. The staff will serve ice cream and families will have a chance to meet new friends and visit with old friends. Please join us at 5:30 PM the evening of October 2nd. The second event is our first Parent Night or Coffee with Mr. Russ of the 2008-2009 School Year. On Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, we will have a discussion about the Boutwell playground and how to make it safer and more fun for all our children as well as an open forum. During the open forum parents can discuss with Mr. Russ any topics on their mind about our school or early childhood. We hope to see you at both events.
Classroom News:
Happy Fall!!!! We look forward to celebrating the season of fall by going on our annual apple and pumpkin picking field trip. Please be on the lookout for upcoming information and permission slips.
During October the children will learn about the changes that take place during the fall season. We will be observing the leaves changing color and falling to the ground as well as talking about how the weather is changing.
Our focus for this month will be on apples, pumpkins and Halloween. The children will have an opportunity to explore seeds in the pumpkins, stamp with apples, sort apples by different varieties and produce AB patterns using paper apples. We will have low-key classroom Halloween parties. However there will be no costumes, please. The room parents may be contacting you regarding how you may be of assistance.
We have begun our Al’s Pals Social Skills training and will be completing one lesson per week in each classroom. In Lesson 1, the children learned each others’ names by replacing their last names with their favorite foods. For example, Mr. Russ became Mr. Russ Pizza. Lesson 2 will bring Al (a puppet) out to meet all of the students. The lessons in October will be about feelings, friendship and cooperation. Look for the parent letter from Al during Lessons 2 and 4.
We have also started incorporating the letter of the week in our daily lessons. During the beginning of the year we will be focusing on letter recognition and building towards sound recognition.
